Excerpt

The next day Redfox strides into the office. He smiles at Mary Jo, the receptionist. “Good morning,” says Redfox.

“Morning, Mr. Campbell,” replies Mary Jo, smiling. Dang, that man is hot.

Ron walks out of his office to talk to Redfox. He strides across to walk into Redfox’s office. “I want you to review all of these policies to make sure that we have them entered into the system. Bryant likes to review them on the laptop and not on paper,” says Ron.

“Sounds good,” replies Redfox, nodding.

“Separate the files that are not in the system. I’ll show you where to enter the new policies. You sure work fast. I’ve been biding my time to get close to Marsha Bryant,” says Ron. He glares at Redfox.

“Right, I don’t want to talk about my girl. That is your issue,” says Redfox.

Ron stands contemplating Redfox for a few. He clenches his fists with rage and storms to his office. He closes the door with anger.

Redfox raises his eyes to look across the room. He shrugs and he starts looking for the files in the system. Fucking jerk is stupid. He never had a chance with my Honey. Yeah, this is so boring, but oh, well. That’s what I’m here for. Damn, this is going to kill me, he thinks.

The task keeps him busy all morning. He’s surprised to see how time has passed. He stands to stretch, raising his arms up.

Marsha walks down the hall. She walks into the office, smiling at Mary Jo. ‘I’m going to talk to Mr. Campbell,” says Marsha, smiling.

“Yes, Ms. Bryant,” replies Mary Jo, nodding.

Oh, yeah. My Baby is in his office, thinks Marsha. She walks up silently to hug him.

Damn, someone is creeping up to me, he thinks. He swiftly turns to grab Marsha and pushes her against the wall. He stares into Marsha’s startled eyes.

Oh shit, it’s my sweet Honey. I’ll be damned. I need to remember that I’m here in an office, he thinks. He smiles quickly to hide his aggression.

“Omg, Scott, you scared me,” says Marsha, blinking up at him.

“Honey, I only want to steal a kiss,” replies Scott. He closes his eyes half way down. He zooms down to kiss her, leaning into her.

Hmmm, I love his kisses, she thinks. Marsha raises her arms and wraps them around his neck.
Hell, yes. She’s sweet. I love my Honey girl, he thinks. He pulls back to grin.

“Honey, is it lunch time?” asks Redfox. “Let’s go have lunch. I can’t wait to spend some time with you.”

“Oh, Baby, yes. I want to have lunch,” agrees Marsha.

Redfox smiles and takes her hand. He laces his fingers with hers. They walk out of the office. They wave at Mary Jo as they walk by.

Ghost:  Everyone does on my team and they are my family, besides Mama and Charlie, of course.  So you are welcome to call me that too, ma’am.

Interviewer:  O.K.  I promise to call you Ghost if you will stop calling me ma’am… it kinda makes me feel old ya know?
What about Andrea, is she your family?

Ghost:  She‘s my everything!  My weakness, my heart and my soul, she is my reason for breathin’ the other half of me is right there, deep in her…

Ghost:  (blushing) Well, Ma’ am I mean, well Andrea says things like that and when she does I sure believe ‘em… and sure I love her forever and always.

Interviewer:  So, rumor has it you fell in love at first site, is that true?

Ghost: (smiling full on with dimples showing) he drawls, yes ma’am I mean yes Miss Interviewer lady, I kinda bumped into her, grabbed that tiny little waist to keep her from fallin’ and she just looked up at me with those big beautiful brown eyes and that was it, she stared right into my soul, I knew then and I know now she is my world forever.

Interviewer:  So is it true you saved her life, too?

Ghost:  My infinity crew, my team took her back from some very evil men with black souls, but I do not like to think about that, only my fiancé in my arms.

Interviewer:  So you are planning a wedding soon?  Are you also planning a family, too?

Ghost:  That is for my fiancé and I to figure out together, and hey look at the time, I need to get back to my love now so thank you for the talk, gotta go…

Excerpt
Ghost drives down Andrea’s street in his black new pickup. He parks a few houses down. He leaves the truck running. He leans back into his seat, gripping the steering wheel. He’s wearing black sunglasses.
Damn, I don’t like where my sweet Darlin lives. Those bastards down the street are up to no good, thinks Nathan. He grabs his cell and quickly texts Andrea that he’s waiting.
“Ghost this is a bad part of Los Angles. We need to hurry. We need to leave as soon as she’s here,” says Loco. He has his shades on and looks down the corner at the hoods gathering around a table, drinking. “Where does she live?”
“She lives down the street on the right in that yellow house. The one across from the hoods,” replies Nathan.
A few yards away from Nathan are some young boys playing with the basketball. They look at Nathan and his truck.
Andrea leaves her house and walks down the steps. She’s carrying her bag. She’s wearing her cute red dress, sexy black sandals and her shiny black hair loose down her back. She stops on the sidewalk. She grabs her sunglasses out of her purse and quickly slides them on. She looks down the street and smiles. Oh yeah, my Baby is waiting, she thinks.
Marcos takes a drink of his Corona. He’s a handsome young man that’s used to having the girls fall at his feet. He’s wearing crisp cotton grey slacks with a white fitted shirt, and black shoes. He has one leg on top of bench. His buddies surround him, playing cards on the table. .
He looks at the house across the street. Yeah, I have to talk to her. I need to get her into my arms. She’s a sweet pussy, thinks Marcos. He continues to wait for Andrea to step out of her house.
Damn yes, Andrea just came out of her house. This is my sweet opportunity to talk to her. Marcos leaves his buddies and strides across the street towards Andrea.
“Andrea you look beautiful,” says Marcos, smiling. He has his Corona in his hand. “When are you going to talk to me? I want to take you out.”
He stands on the curb, looking at her. He licks his lips. “Andrea you have me crazy for you.”
Andrea turns to look at him and turns away. She starts striding quickly down the street towards Nathan.
Marcos sees her walk away and this infuriates him. What’s her fucking problem? Does she think she’s too good for me, thinks Marcos.
He throws his Corona in the ground and starts following her with determination. That pussy is going to be mine. The boss wants her. She will bring in lots of money. I already have a list of clients waiting for her.
Andrea walks quickly, trying to reach Nathan. Damn I have to ignore him. I’m almost there, thinks Andrea, anxiously. She bites her lower lip with fear. Damn I’m so glad that my Baby is here. He’s so big and strong.
Marcos runs after her and grasps her arm. “Fucking bitch, what’s wrong with you! You’re always ignoring me. You think you’re too good for me!” yells Marcos. He pulls her close to him, glaring down at her.
Andrea yells with fear, her eyes expand. She trembles, her complexion turn white. She moves to take his hand off of her. “Let me go Marcos!” she yells.

“There she is, my Darlin girl,” whispers Nathan, smiling. He glances over at Loco.
“Yeah that’s her,” says Loco, laughing at Nathan. “Yeah brother your pussy whipped.”
Nathan watches her stop and slides her glasses on. He then watches Marcos walk over to her. Nathan grasps the steering wheel with anger. “What the fuck does that asshole want with her,” says Nathan. He watches closely to see if she’s going to talk to him.
Oh yeah, she’s not giving him the time of day, thinks Nathan. He smiles, and then he sees red when he sees him run after her and grabs her arm.
That son of bitch!” yells Nathan. He jumps out of the truck. He sprints the few yards down the street, pounding into the asphalt, towards Andrea. His heart pounds hard in his chest, full of anger, anxiety, and the extreme urgency to get her away from him. He reaches Andrea and pulls her away from him.
“Mother fucker what in the hell do you think you’re doing. Don’t touch my woman,” growls Nathan. He glares down at Marcos.
“Hot Dang! Whup his ass!” yells Loco. He jumps out of the truck and runs after him. He stops right behind them.
He watches Marcos buddies start to run over. Oh hell this is going to get ugly, he thinks. They’re only six. Yeah it’ll take only a few minutes to calm these assholes down.
Loco looks at them line up behind Marcos. Hmm these pups are going to get their ass whup, he thinks. Loco grins at them.
“Puto (male whore), she’s your woman, and since when? The last time I checked this pussy didn’t have an owner,” says Marcos, smirking. Yeah I love this, this pussy has an owner. Now I’m going to enjoy taking her form him, thinks Marcos.
“Fucking asshole, don’t every talk to her or about her like that! She’s a lady!” yells Nathan, turning red. He’s blood boils with anger.
“Darlin go to my truck,” says Nathan, softly to Andrea. Not losing sight of Marcos. “I’ll be there in a few.”
Andrea is shaking with fear. Omg Marcos is crazy. He’s so vulgar, thinks Andrea.
She strides quickly to the truck, gripping her bag tight. She opens the door, throws her bag in the rear seat, and slides into the middle of the bench seat. She stares at them, trembling with fear. She moves a strand of hair from her eyes and sets it behind her ear. She whips the tears from her eyes biting her lower lip.
Omg, what if my Baby wasn’t here to protect me. He would have taken me, she thinks, shuddering.
Andreas’s little brother Raul stands near the bushes hiding. He’s shaking with fear. That mean Marcos wants my sister Andrea. I’m so scared of him. Who are these huge men? That white man is picking up my sister Andrea, thinks Raul.
Loco is ready to fight, he monitors their actions. These bastards don’t know who they’re messing with, he thinks.
Nathan takes a few steps forward and stops right in front of Marcos face. He looks down and glares at him enraged. “Fucking asshole, I’m going to tell you once. I’m going to kill you if you go near her again. Don’t ever look or touch her again,” says Nathan, softly. He grinds his jaw, the muscle flexing from the pressure.
Nathan is a good eight inches taller than Marcos. He towers over all of his buddies. He’s an imposing man. Marcos buddies eye Nathan and then glance over at Loco.
Loco stands with his feet spread out and ready to fight. His huge hands are fisted. He smiles at them and winks. Oh yeah, they’re going to be my girlfriends, thinks Loco.
“Puto, I’m telling you now, I’m taking her from you,” growls Marcos. He stares Nathan down. “Don’t look away because I will kill you.”
“You’re dead,” growls Nathan.
“You gay mother fucker,” yells Marcos, smirking. “I’m ready anytime to fuck you. You’re going to me my puto.”
“You little roach, you really want to die,” growls Nathan. His growl vibrates deep in his throat.
“I’m going to kill you!” yells Marcos. Marcos pulls out his blade and takes a stab at Nathan.
Nathan quickly grabs his hand and twists it behind him. He pulls Marcos arm up his back. Nathan wraps his arm around his neck and pulls him against his chest. He forces Marcos to release the blade.
“Fucking roach, I’m going to whup your ass. Yeah I’m looking forward to ass whupping time,” whispers Nathan.
Loco quickly kicks the blade and glares at Marcos buddies. Then he grins and winks at them.
Nathan pulls his arm further up and hears the bone crack.
Marcos yells out in pain and sways from the pain.
Nathan grins at Marcos buddies. “Music to my ears,” whispers Nathan. He shoves Marcos into his buddies.
Marcos buddies move to catch him. They glare at Nathan and Loco. They’re too scared to even try to fight them. One yells at Nathan. “Gringo (white guy) we’re going to hunt you down and kill you. That pussy is ours,” yells a tall thin bastard.
Nathan glares at him and walks over to him. He picks him up by his shirt and slams him against fence. “I will teach you fuckers some manners. You will never refer to my woman like that,” whispers Nathan. He swings back and punches him the mouth.
The thin bastard head swings back into the fence. His lower lip splits and starts to bleed. Nathan throws him down the ground.
He turns to glare at the other hoods. They quickly drag Marcos and the thin bastard to the house.
Nathan looks over at Raul hiding behind the bushes. He looks him straight in the eyes. Nathan slightly nods his head.
Raul smiles at Nathan. He then stands, trembling from fear, and runs home.

Counter Balance by Patricia Bates

Counter Balance by Patricia Bates

A woman with secrets. A man with honor. Can love survive?

When an unknown foe kidnaps Alex Caden, her rescue comes at the hands of an elite Navy SEAL team. But there are secrets that will keep those who want her dead on her trail.

Slade Lake has dedicated his life to keeping civilians safe. When he saves Alex, he knows as soon as he sees her that they're meant to be together. With killers dogging their every step and secrets unfolding can they find love or will the enemies from the shadows destroy everything?

Excerpt:

Slade clicked his communicator, his steps confident as the team eased through the opening in the gate to blend into the shadows of the interior of the estate. Hunkered down behind a massive four-wheeler, Slade spread out on his belly, his gaze sweeping the courtyard.

Men huddled around barrels, fire lapping at the cold air. Several men shifted, their attention on a nondescript shed half-hidden beyond a stack of straw bales. Dogs lunged at the ends of their chains, their fury evident in the howls and roars of captivity.

Slade slapped the shoulder of the nearest man and pointed. Out of four buildings only one was guarded. Six heavily armed men stood at the door. "Our target's there."

"You sure?"

"Can you think of any reason to have six men guarding a tool shed?" Slade shook his head. "I can. Something or someone is there…and my guess is it's the target."

"We're right behind you."

Slade ran from the cover of the four-wheeler toward the shed. Bent over, he darted between barrels and vehicles, keeping his rifle pressed against his side. Sliding on ice, Slade hugged the shed. From his position, he could easily see his men. A quick nod and he pulled the sidearm from its holster.

"Hell, this is nuts," Slade muttered and leaned to the side. His gaze swept the front of the building.

Two men stood together, their attention on the cigarettes in their hands, weapons looped casually over their shoulders. The other four scanned their surroundings, eyes peeled for danger. This is going to be hairy.

A flash of red on the neck of one of them drew his attention. Whipping his head around, Slade scanned the yard. A glint of light from atop a truck revealed Smoke's position. Across the courtyard, several men fell, sending those surrounding them racing for weapons.

Slade gave a slow nod. "Time to dance."

Ten seconds later one of the guards dropped to the ground, red spurting from a severed jugular. Seeing their comrades go down, the compound lit up.

"Damn!" Slade grunted as he watched two more men race from the building, weapons drawn. The door slammed shut behind them, the last turning to click something into place.

"Keep your head down, Danny-boy," Pyke's voice filled Slade's ear before his radio fell silent.

Darting past the remaining guards, Slade headed for the door, the firefight heating up around him. Aiming from the hip, he shot two before he reached the door. "Mother…" With a well placed bullet, the lock shattered. Jerking the door open, Slade ducked on his way in, the pistol a welcomed weight in his palm.

One foot in front of the other he inched into the dark, his gaze darting through the faint beams of light. He stumbled, his gaze locked on movement in the shadows. He assessed the curled figure—long, toned legs flowed into the trim body of a woman. A delicate white lace bra and matching panties provided her only protection from the elements. She shifted, gathering her feet beneath her. His eyes narrowed and rage flared as he caught the ugly, red lines along the soles of her feet. A whimper escaped her, and he glanced at her face.

Slade felt his heart drop. Golden eyes, surrounded by thick, pale lashes, glared at him. An ugly bruise trailed along one side of her face. Blood oozed from a wound on her right shoulder, staining her bra and flesh with deep crimson streaks.

If this was their target, he was in deep shit.

About the Author:

Reading has been such a large part of my life. I cut my literary teeth on such authors as Louis L'Amour, Nora Roberts and Janet Dailey. For me it wasn't such a jump from reading the wonderful tales these authors spun to imagining my own.

Soon I was writing poetry, short stories and by junior high I'd written my first full length romance novel. Since then I've taken my love of history and my passion for writing and combined them into what I hope will continue to prove a successful career.

With six books contracted, four of which are currently available in print. All are available in electronic format with the last two ebooks due for a release in May and the other in the summer. I'm currently working on three projects, an erotic paranormal romance featuring a witch who loves Christmas, another Ancient Ireland novel, rich in the history of the Irish Celtic peoples, and plotting out a Cowboy Series tentatively titled "The James Gang".

Of course I've got a lot more on the go. I'm developing and growing my editing company with some amazing authors, working on polishing my concepts and plans for upcoming books within the paranormal genres, and keeping up on my writing and being a full time mom, working outside of the house…it's amazing what one can manage in a 16 hour day.

BIO:
I confess I've had a love affaire with vampires for several years now, especially warrior vampires, the kind found in the books of Sherrilyn Kenyon, Lara Adrian and JR Ward. Though I've been published in Regency Romance under the pseudonym Valerie King--and yes one of my Regency Novellas features a vampire--one day I woke up knowing I had to create my own contemporary world of the warrior vampire.
For some mystical, magical reason, early in the process, my vampires appeared with enormous beautiful wings and it has been the most amazing experience to include flight in my novels, in both battle scenes and scenes involving spectacle. My special vampire world, published by St. Martin's Press, is introduced in the first book called, ASCENSION (12-28-2010). The second book, BURNING SKIES (May of 2011), opens up the world a little bit more. And even as I write this, I'm on the final draft of my third novel, WINGS OF FIRE (September of 2011). What a thrill it has been to live with my ascended vampires through the creation of this extraordinary, multi-dimensional world!
For more information about my unique take on the vampire mythos, check out my website at carisroane.com and my book release video on YouTube by putting in the search phrase, Caris Roane Ascension.

EXCERPT:
From Chapter Two: Mastyr Quinlan, having survived an enemy attack because Batya healed him, has to brush out his long warrior hair. Batya helps him out…
Quinlan showered, washing out the mass of his hair twice then applying Batya’s crème rinse until he’d have a half-way decent shot at getting the snarls out with a brush.
Using her blow dryer, he scowled as he watched his damn hair fly around. Why couldn’t a vampire, especially a Guardsman, have some kind of preternatural power to remove snarls and dry his hair without electricity?
“Want some coffee with your ‘shits’ and ‘damn-all-the-elf-lords-to-hell-and-back’?” He met Batya’s reflection in the mirror, and saw a mug extended in his direction.
He shut the dryer off, turned around, and took the cup. “That bad, huh?”
Batya chuckled. She had dimples, two of them. Not deep, but they were definitely there, beside her mouth. He’d never noticed before, but then most of his seduction work had taken place at a distance.
“Turn around. I’ll work the back section.”
He didn’t hesitate, something that resonated deep in his brain as a serious warning of some kind, but he wasn’t sure in what way.
She picked up the brush he’d been using and started at the tips. He couldn’t even feel the tugs so he drank his coffee and released a sigh.
His thoughts turned to Grochaire, the realm he ruled. “I need to get word to my Guard, to warn them about what they’re up against. But my telepathy isn’t working through your shield and my phone got blasted by one of those wraith-pairs.”
“You can try my phone, but I can’t guarantee you’ll get through, not with the shield I have in place. Sorry, but staying alive has a priority here.”
He smiled because he couldn’t have agreed with her more.
She brushed through a long length, hit a snag and started working it. He could see her in the mirror, brow furrowed. He’d seen that look already, more than once just conversing with her. She had a seriousness about her that he approved of, maybe because it matched his own.
He sipped some more and watched her. She was a beautiful woman and tall, maybe just under six feet. He wouldn’t have to lean too far down to pull her into his arms and kiss her. She wore her hair loose with clips holding it away from her face.  She had strong cheekbones and a straight nose. Her chin was definitely fae, more pointed than a human’s would be, but exquisite.

He knew her ancestry, half-fae, half-troll, her genetics having fallen on the fae side. Realm-DNA did that when the species mixed. The offspring landed one way or another, the same if more than two lines made up the code. Genetics always picked a lane. He realized that he liked her looks, really liked them. “Have you ever done a self-portrait?”
She picked up another long hunk of his hair and once more started at the tips, working swiftly. “I don’t really do faces. I’ve always been into landscapes and the occasional still-life if the objects intrigue me enough.”
“Do you go out, snap photos of woodlands, that kind of thing?”
“Sometimes.” She stopped brushing and scratched her cheek with her thumb. “But more often than not I’ll get these rich images in my head and that’s what I’ll paint.”
“Sounds fae.”
She started brushing again, making quick work as he sipped his coffee. “Maybe. Probably. I don’t think about it. I just paint and let the spirit move me.”
He smiled. “The spirit, huh?”
“It’s a good earth-saying, don’t you think?”
“I suppose it is. So you like being here on human earth?”
“I do. In fact, I love it. I didn’t know what happiness or freedom was until I moved here.” She met his gaze in the mirror. “And I don’t plan on ever returning to the Nine Realms. The day that we made our treaties with the US, turned out to be the best day of my life…”
